Staying positive?

I was excited to run Finger Lakes 50k this coming Saturday, but now just a few days out it's become questionable how doable this might be. I'm trying to stay positive that things turn around, but at this point: (a) my foot, while much improved, is still a question mark for beyond a couple of hours; (b) I've had a nasty chest infection for over a week now (same one I've had several times since last October; went to dr yesterday, finally); and (c) the forecast for Ithaca says high of 34 with humidex 42 on Saturday. If those were in Fahrenheit I'd be thrilled, but no, that's Celcius of course. Ick. And now, to top it off, (d) Derrick is fighting something, which doesn't affect my race, but just sucks.

There's a good chance I'll be dropping down to the 25k (as long as they let me, which I'm sure they will.) That seems like the smart thing to do, and might be more than enough 'fun' on the day.

I know exactly what you mean. I may also not be running it. I really want to run Vermont in 3 weeks, and need a long training run (finger lakes)....but I'm pretty certain now that I have some sort of tiny stress fracture in my toe. If I don't run for 3-4 days it feels great, but as soon as I run again it hurts. I really need like 2-3 weeks off for it to heal.

34C? ugh. I think I'd rather it be muddy again.

Whatever happens....I'm going to show up and have fun...even if it is just cheering people on. If I do run, it will more than likely be a downgrade as well.

Tis the life of a runner I suppose :-)

Hope you and Derrick are feeling better soon.

Sorry to hear about your toe, that sucks. Good luck making the call, it isn't easy is it?

Oh yeah, I'd take the mud ANY day.

See you there.

Oh Sara I am sure you are disappointed but YOU are one of the strongest, and most determined people I know. It is OK to drop down to the 25 if that is what you need to do, you know your body better than anyone. I know Derrick and you will enjoy this time together trying to reach your goals no matter how short, or how long the course.
Get well soon both of you. Life is a journey and you have to enjoy the unexpected things that get thrown at you. I know you and Derrick have had your share of those. Take care GOOD LUCK, keep cool, and have fun. I will be thinking great thoughts for both you. B

So are you staying off the foot til Saturday? I wish I took the week off leading up to Emilie's. I wish I didn't race with a sore foot the weekend before. I wish I didn't created the sore foot by pushing too hard during my intervals the week and half before. I told d. that I will never race on a sore foot ever ever again. I say this now in hopes that it will force me to measure by efforts accordingly leading up to an important race. Good Luck figuring out what is your best course of action.

Thanks, EJ. That hindsight being 20/20 is so annoyingly true, I can relate to that as well. I'm taking it pretty easy, the brutal cough is making it easy to stay off the foot for the most part. We'll see what happens.

I had to look up humidex.

42 is gross.

Sara said...

GZ, I am very jealous that you have no concept of humidex.

Derrick said...

GZ...tough life you have out there. Lots of mountains, and no humidex or deer flies.

Whatever you decide, GOOD LUCK to you and Derrick!!

Late to the party on this one. Sucks, but Trans Rockies is the priority and that is the race you need to focus on, but you know that. Do what you can at FL and have fun with it. It will be HOT, but looks like a bit less mud. Good luck and get better!!!!
Hugs
David.

I'm super late with this now, but hoping everything went well whether the 25 or 50. Hope you were stubborn and did the 50 : )
